A bit on my office building:

It was formerly a factory building most likely, due to the area I'm located in (south of Midtown) and the district I work in, and therefore, it's definitely a prewar and solidly built. Sometimes when there's a nasty, windy storm a-brewing, we can feel the building move just a touch, the intentional sway that says, this is a well designed building. The floor shakes just a bit when the dancers on a floor two floors under us are in the middle of a pounding regime.

So. At first, I was like, fuckin' musical theater kids...but that usually lasts a couple of seconds and then I started getting unsettled and oh hey, that's an earthquake.

Right. That happened. Prefer a hurricane, to be honest.

FYI pretty sure I'd be fucked if we experienced an earthquake close to NYC since this was a Virginia born baby. Yikes.

I am so AMUSED. I was outside at a cafe when it happened, and everybody was like OMG earthquake, and I didn't move.

My waitress: "Didn't you notice?"
Me: "Er, yes, why?"

We just do not do these here, man. Neighbor and I were both standing there going, "Wait, is this an earthquake?"

I don't think I realized how very alien they were to everybody until I saw so many people freaking out on twitter, while I watched, perplexed.

Alien is exactly right - we seriously just do not have a box to put "ground shaking under our feet" in.

Ha, I mean, I just sort of cruised through it and was just unsettled at how it felt afterwards since we just don't FEEL that, the ground ain't supposed to move.

Tell me about it. We had a 4.0 nearby once when I was on the toilet.

I'm just so tickled by the fact that they started evacuating buildings up here. Oh you guys.

Word wordy mcworderson. My reaction basically said "Right, so you're completely unprepared for that kind of disaster."

It's good to know, I guess, at how fucked we'd be.

I didn't know you could have those there! By which I mean, I didn't know the US West Coast had seismic areas.

Unsettling is the word. It's possible that the first one a person experiences is the worst because you've never felt it before. When it happened here in 2009 I, well, I didn't totally freak out because it was really short but it's a seriously disturbing experience, which yeah, I'd rather not have repeated to test that theory of growing accustomed to it.

Glad you're alright.

You may not say you prefer the Hurricane after this weekend. It looks like it *might* be pretty substantial. Getting all sorts of earth stuff this week, right?

We definitely felt it. Our building is old and it was very much felt. Never done that before. Wild.
