"Gray" is how most Americans tend to spell it, my Microsoft Word doesn't think "grey" is right (LOL and Firefox hates it too). I've fixed my Word to learn better and I'm doing that to Firefox now too.

It's a visual thing for me personally. I'm dyslexic and sometimes I "see" words in my head (the spelling of my Sister K's name is er, unique, and it's a common name but whenever I think of her or say her name, I visual the spelling of it, dunno why). So I've always seen grey as..."grey" in my head.

Total serious business. LOL.

Ok, this might sound weird, but I think I'm in a safe space for that, so I'm going to go ahead.

Grey looks much warmer to me, more fuzzy and friendly.
Gray looks sharper, more steely.

Therefore, I tend to think that 'gray' suits the mood of the color more, UNLESS it's something where a fuzzier spelling might be more appropriate.

Lots of words have alternate spellings. I'm sure you know this, but gray is the American, grey the British. As a matter of style, for printed publications, you go with the first alternate spelling listed in Webster's. So it would be gray instead of grey, and guerrilla instead of guerilla--though both of those are correct. Some words with variant spellings have no one spelling that is favored (for example, acknowledgment and acknowledgement), so either is correct as long as the same spelling is used throughout.

Thanks for the extra info--I did know that "gray" is the preferred US spelling but it's good to know why it was decided to be the proper spelling over grey.

Heh, I think I'll continue to write it as "grey" despite my spelling being American in all other respects.

I've written essays where I switched back and forth from grey to gray without realizing it. I tend to favor grey, but years of teacher's red pens slashing through my work has conditioned me to try and avoiding Word's and Firefox' judgmental red underline of judgmental-ness. :(

I picked Gray because that's my roommate and my daughters last name. Every other way of spelling it looks wrong to me now.
