Homemade pasteles = win

Goya pasteles = LAMESAUCE

I will spork anyone who thinks manufactured pasteles from a COMPANY are better than homemade. Stef.

This means WAR.

I could decode it for you!

In small text so Stef can't see it!

pasteles, the delicious puerto rican food of wonders and delight, similar to a tamale, only INSANELY delicious, take forever to make homemade if you're doing it properly. Stef had totally insulted me by claiming she finds Goya's pre-made frozen brand to be satisfactory.

She has not actually insulted me. I am busting her chops.

Ooooh, it's FOOD. Interesting!

And doesn't homemade always trump store-bought food?

Homemade often does and pasteles are just. SO AMAZING when homemade from scratch. Although they DO have to be frozen because they can last for a very long time, but I shake my head at Stef's willingness to purchase meh-pasteles.

It could be that my family makes the most incredible pasteles ever that I am ruined for all other pasteles. Hopefully this December we'll have time to make them! (It takes about a day of work, with about five people working together, because we make so much.)

I will spork you for taking the time to make a POST insinuating that I implied THAT when I just said they were NOMMY and cheap and easy to cook.

YOU ARE A DORK. THIS BEARS REPEATING.

P.S. YOUR FIC IS GOOD. I LIKES IT.

Goya pasteles

Which my brain helpfully translated into "goyishe pasties."

Oh your brain. I love it so. That is a hilarious image. Mmmm Goya. I always recognize that name as the food brand and it takes me a few minutes to register oh yeah, he's also that painter than gave me nightmares when I got to see some of his paintings up close.

It was always awesome during my art history class when the professor would go "Goya" and my first though was, "why yes, I AM hungry."

I've never had pasteles, only tamales. What's the difference?

Date: 2008-08-01 02:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] regala-electra.livejournal.com
The most obvious difference is that pasteles are made with (unripe) bananas. They're not sweet at all, though. My family makes them primarily with bananas but we also use plantains and other roots such as yuca and malanga. Also from everything I know about pasteles, they're only ever made with pork, if you're using meat (and we er, always use pork, Puerto Ricans <3 pork, OTP), but I think tamales are made with other types of meats?

I've had tamales a couple of times and the taste is different but then I don't really like cornmeal much. Probably because I didn't grow up with it, at all.

You know Reg at some point I shall get my butt in gear and actually save money rather than throw it at my credit card and so I shall be in your neck of the woods. At that time I DEMAND you cook for me. You go on about all this wonderful food and half the time I have no idea what it is but it sounds yummo. So, yes, cooking. :claps hands: I demand it.

*laughs* I love buying my friends' love by cooking. And IMPLIED cooking. Yeeees come to my neck of the woods. Let me know what foods you despise. And I shall cook. ;-)

(For the record, Stef KILLS me because she doesn't eat cheese and almost all my recipes, except for pasteles, heh, involve cheese somewhere.)

Goya pasteles

Just butting in rudely, because I am so craving pasteles!! I totally agree that the Goya ones are not as good, but I live in California, where I couldn't find a homemade pastel to save my life. I am Irish, but our sort of adopted Grandma was Puerto Rican when I lived in New York as a child, and she would make us the yummiest food ever. If you live in California, you can't even come by the ingredients for pasteles. My local grocery used to carry the Goya ones but discontinued them. For someone craving the taste of "home", they were a whole lot better than nothing!
